5 Ways To Get Rid Of Stage Jitters
Dec 04, 2023
Here at ZIND Academy, we encourage our students to perform on stage as much as possible. The reason being, is that this is where we see the most growth in our students. Performance time is a fun, chaotic hodgepodge of emotions and experiences. I know we have all been there with the butterflies in our stomach and some stage fright. Even though performances are filled with energy and adrenaline, you can't forget the dance jitters that may come along with the excitement. I have yet to come across a dancer (OR an instructor) who hasn’t had a case of these backstage tinglings.
So what do you do to get rid of them?
- Deep Breathing: Practice deep breathing exercises before going on stage. Inhale slowly through your nose, hold for a few seconds, and exhale slowly through your mouth. This helps to calm your nervous system. I know, it seems like an obvious one but over time, I’ve found that getting in some deep breaths helps calm me down right before a performance. So always remember, breathe in 1-2-3 and breathe out 1-2-3. This simple technique will instantly make you feel better.
-
Visualization: Close your eyes and visualize yourself performing successfully. Imagine the movements going smoothly and the audience applauding. Positive visualization can help build confidence. Imagine yourself dancing and giving it your all - your 100% on stage. When you can see yourself doing that very thing that scares you, it makes it easier to execute. It’s telling your brain that you’ve already done it.
-
Preparation: Ensure that you are well-rehearsed. Knowing your routine inside out can boost your confidence and reduce anxiety. You don't practice until you get it right, practice until you can't get it wrong. If you are adequately prepared with your routine, you can focus on having fun on stage rather than trying to remember the moves.
-
Focus on the Present Moment: Instead of worrying about potential mistakes or what the audience might think, focus on the present moment and that you're doing something that you love. Concentrate on each step and movement. Replace negative thoughts with positive ones. Challenge any self-doubt and replace it with confidence-building statements.
-
Have fun. You are on stage because you are meant to be on stage, in this moment. Embrace it and have fun with it. Not everyone gets to pursue their passion or something they love to do. Enjoy these moments and create lasting memories.
