Rediscovering Yourself In Dance
Feb 01, 2024
We've been lucky to see a wave of interest from individuals wanting to dive into the world of dance teaching at our bollywood dance studio. So much so that, for the past few months, I took a break from leading classes and stepped back from the actual teaching. But after a few weeks of downtime, a familiar itch kicked in – that feeling of needing to figure myself out again.
I had to get back inside those studio walls, whether to teach or just try out some moves. It became my go-to outlet. So, I joined workshops hosted by fellow dancers in our local community, signed up for a weekly hip-hop class, and even revisited my roots in Bharatanatyam for a bit of fine-tuning.
I've always raved about dance being an outlet, but it's more than that – it's about rediscovering your identity by immersing yourself in it. Emily McDowell nails it with her quote: "Finding yourself" isn't like stumbling upon a forgotten bill in last winter's coat. You're not lost; your true self is right there, beneath cultural conditioning and the opinions and childhood notions that shaped your beliefs.
It's not so much about finding as it is about returning to yourself – unlearning, digging up, remembering who you were before the world left its mark.
We often hear the advice to "find yourself" after a tough time. But really, you're not discovering something new; it's already there. You're just lifting the cover and reaching inside.
If you feel like this might be you and you want to get back to something you enjoy doing in a judgement free space, book a trial class at any of our locations.
