Why Adults Return Back To Dance

I was always in awe that our two fastest-growing classes are our youngest kids' class and our adult class. Our kids are trying to figure out who they are and what they like, whereas our adults are trying to return back to who they are and what they like. Ironic, isn't it? I love to see it. Our adult class grew so big last semester that we had to split it into two after two months. I've talked to almost every adult that has walked through our doors and asked them what they are looking for from our class. The answers are almost always the same: "I used to dance and want to get back into it." "I took lessons growing up, but life got in the way, so now I'm ready to do something for myself." Even though I've been dancing for over three decades now, I can relate every time I take a small break or pause. It feels like something is missing.

Adults may return to dance for a variety of reasons, and these motivations can be both personal and practical. Here are some common reasons why adults might choose to resume dancing:

Physical Fitness: Dance offers a dynamic and engaging way for adults to maintain and improve their physical fitness. It's a great way to get cardio sessions in without even realizing an hour has gone by. Commitment to class tends to be higher because of the sheer passion and fun that exudes from a dance community.

Stress Relief: It is a total and effective stress reliever. As we immerse ourselves in dance, we can temporarily escape the stresses of daily life. The focus on movement and music allows a unique, therapeutic experience where nothing else matters for that one hour every week.

Social Interaction: Dance classes are also social events and create a vibrant community where adults can connect with others who share a similar passion. Let's face it; it's hard to make friends as an adult. Dance provides a shared interest that connects you to other dance lovers. You make friends and have great energy around you without even trying.

Artistic Expression: Dance provides a unique outlet for artistic expression. Adults returning to dance often rediscover the expression of emotions through movement. This creative aspect allows individuals to explore different dance styles, experiment with choreography, and feel seen - all through dance.

Builds Confidence: We often see so many activities where building confidence in kids is the goal. But dance is universal. As we experience more of life, there are seasons where we get hit hard, and it chisels away at our confidence and identity. Building skills and inevitably stepping out of our comfort zones through dance help us regain some of the confidence we may have lost along the years. Adults who engage in continuous learning through dance become more adaptable and open to new experiences, fostering a sense of confidence in their ability to navigate and embrace change in various aspects of life.

Dance for grown-ups is like a secret sauce that adds zest to life, offering a taste of achievement, and a boost to the confidence journey. It's not just a hobby; it's what makes the adulting adventure more fun and fulfilling.
