What Is Bollywood "Fusion" Dance?
Dec 22, 2023
Over the last few years, I have witnessed the emergence of the term "Bollywood Fusion" or the intertwining of two dance styles, such as "Bollyhop." We frequently use these terms as class descriptions, and they are now associated with many other dance styles like classical fusion, Tollywood fusion, bhangra fusion, bollyhop, Bollywood bhangra, etc. So, where did this trend originate, and where does it stop?
It doesn't. One of the remarkable features of Bollywood dance is its versatility and its ability to seamlessly fuse with various dance styles. This fusion not only adds uniqueness to performances but also reflects the diverse and dynamic nature of Bollywood itself. Here are several great aspects of blending Bollywood with different dance styles:
Cultural Fusion: Bollywood dance is inherently a blend of various Indian classical and folk dance forms. When fused with other dance styles, it creates an intricate cultural blend that is very pleasing to the eyes. The mix of traditional Indian movements with Western, Latin, or other global dance styles results in a rich and diverse dance repertoire.
Creativity and Innovation: Fusing Bollywood with different dance styles allows for endless possibilities in terms of choreography and creativity. Choreographers can experiment with movements, rhythms, and storytelling, pushing the boundaries of traditional dance and creating fresh, innovative performances. I have conducted many 'classical fusion' workshops, which push me to think outside the box so that I don't sway to one end more than the other. It's an interesting and well-received blend of two respected styles.
Appeal to Diverse Audiences: By incorporating elements from different dance styles, these South Asian dance forms become more accessible and appealing to a broader audience. The fusion can attract individuals who may not be familiar with traditional Indian dance but are drawn to the energetic and expressive nature of Bollywood. It gives an introduction to a few core elements without intimidating the dancer into trying something new. For instance, I can wholeheartedly say that bhangra is not my forte. I am in awe of it and have so much respect for the style, but it is a dance form that takes me a little longer to pick up than classical, Bollywood, or hip hop. So when we have bhangra fusion or Bollywood bhangra workshops, I get very excited because I know it will be a good introduction and practice of a style that's more foreign to me.
Entertaining: Combining Bollywood with other dance forms often results in dynamic and visually stunning routines that have surprise elements. You may not expect the switch of styles in the middle of the routine, and it can be a pleasant surprise for the audience watching but also fun for the dancer. The fusion of styles brings a heightened level of entertainment, making the routines more engaging and memorable.
Global Connectivity: The global popularity of Bollywood films and music has led to the integration of Bollywood dance in various cultural events and dance communities worldwide. Fusing Bollywood with local or international dance styles fosters cross-cultural connections and appreciation.
Expression of Individuality: Dancers and choreographers have the opportunity to infuse their personal style and creativity into Bollywood fusion. This allows for a unique expression of individuality within the broader framework of Bollywood dance.
Overall, the ability to fuse Bollywood with different dance styles not only celebrates diversity but also contributes to the evolving and inclusive nature of dance as an art form. It exemplifies the cultural exchange and collaboration within the global dance community.
To participate in the growth of fusion, we host a workshop every weekend, aside from our weekly classes. Join us each weekend for a unique yet fun experience. No prior dance experience is required. We bring different dance styles with different dance instructors every time. This is a great way to get back into dancing, be a part of an amazing community, and make some friends along the way.
