It's Not Goodbye To Dance, It's See You Later
Jan 16, 2024
Every dancer I know, including myself, has taken a pause in their dance journey. If we're dancing frequently (i.e weekly, multiple times a week), taking a break from dance is something many of us go through, and the reasons for it can be as unique as each individual. Yet, the pull to get back into dance often comes from a mix of personal passion, the longing for the energy and fun, and an awareness of the physical and mental perks dance brings. Here's why people take a hiatus and what sparks their return.
Life changes, like a new job, a move, or diving into education, might nudge people to hit pause on dance temporarily as they focus on other aspects of life. Sometimes, it's health issues or injuries that prompt a break, and the return happens when they feel ready to move again.
Dance burnout is a real thing—those moments when the dance floor feels more exhausting than exhilarating. A break becomes a chance to recharge, and the comeback is fueled by a refreshed spirit. For busy bees juggling work, family, and life's demands, a brief dance hiatus can be a breather. The return is often fueled by a craving to bring a new creativity back into the routine.
Low motivation or creative blocks might lead to a break, but the return often happens when that dance spark reignites. Sometimes, people take a break to explore new interests, yet the love for dance has a magnetic pull, drawing them back. Personal growth journeys, including self-discovery and mental health focuses, can lead to a dance break. Dance, with its therapeutic touch, often becomes a way to reconnect with oneself during such times.
The return to dance is like coming back to a friend you've missed. It's driven by a deep love for the art, a desire for physical activity, the appreciation of self-expression, and the camaraderie that dance communities offer. Whether it's finding a renewed purpose, reigniting creative flames, or just wanting to move and connect with others, the reasons for returning to dance are as diverse and heartwarming as the individuals themselves.
