Dance Freeze: Conquering Performance Anxiety in Your Recording Sessions

Our dance students in our bollywood classes are constantly performing. Whether it be in small groups in front of their peers at the end of class, on stage in front of hundreds or even in workshops, we encourage our students to overcome the anxiety that comes with performing - or just being- in front of an audience. Experiencing freezing or stage fright when recording dance routines, even after practicing extensively, is a common challenge. Here are a few potential reasons for this phenomenon and some strategies to overcome it:

  1. Performance Anxiety:

    • Reason: The pressure of recording can trigger performance anxiety, making you feel nervous or self-conscious.
    • Overcome: Try to shift your focus from the recording itself to the enjoyment of the dance. Remind yourself that it's okay to make mistakes, and the recording is an opportunity to showcase your hard work.
  2. Fear of Perfection:

    • Reason: Wanting the recording to be perfect may create added stress and cause freezing.
    • Overcome: Embrace the imperfections and consider each recording as a chance for improvement. Understand that small mistakes are part of the process and don't define your overall performance.
  3. Pressure of Permanence:

    • Reason: Knowing that the recording is permanent can induce fear of making irreversible mistakes.
    • Overcome: Remind yourself that recordings can be retaken, edited, or even used as a learning tool. Treat each recording as a step towards progress.
  4. Lack of Familiarity:

    • Reason: Recording environments may be unfamiliar, leading to discomfort.
    • Overcome: Practice recording in the same or similar environment where you'll be recording the final routine. Familiarity can help ease nervousness.
  5. Mindfulness and Visualization:

    • Strategy: Practice mindfulness techniques to stay in the present moment. Visualization can also be helpful – imagine yourself dancing confidently during the recording.
  6. Record Regularly:

    • Strategy: Make recording a regular part of your practice routine. The more you do it, the more accustomed you'll become to the process.
  7. Positive Affirmations:

    • Strategy: Develop positive affirmations to boost your confidence. Repeat these affirmations before and during the recording to shift your mindset.
  8. Supportive Environment:

Remember, it's completely normal to feel nervous before recording. Overcoming this challenge takes time and practice. Be patient with yourself, celebrate small victories, and gradually build your comfort with the recording process.
