Mama Got Her Groove Back: Rediscovering the Joy of Dance After 17 Years
Dec 18, 2023
"Mama got her groove back! Or I'd like to think that it was just hidden by becoming a career woman, a wife, and a mom of 3..After 17 years, I danced on stage again and was reminded what it is that I love to do"
This was a post from one of our adult intermediate bollywood dance students. We had our winter recital last night and she posted this up a few hours later. To say her and her fellow dance mates had a great performance wouldn't do it justice. I remember when she first came to our studio to attend her free trial class. She had some dance training previously and after establishing a career and family, she was ready to bust a few moves. She was very friendly, excited and a little nervous to get back into dancing. A few months of attending weekly classes, she moved into our adult intermediate class. A few months after that, she was performing on stage front row center.
We get these messages and testimonials all the time but this hit differently when I came across it. Our adult classes are filled with women (and men too!) that are trying to find little pieces of themselves that may have been put to the side while building a career, a home and family. At some point, all of them had decided it was time to reconnect with a long-lost part of themselves. Stepping into our dance studio feels like a reunion with an old friend. As the music blasts and the energy is heightened, you are transported back to a time when dance was not just an activity, but a form of self-expression, freedom, identity and fun.
In the hustle and bustle of life, it's easy for our passions to take a backseat to the demands of career, family, and other responsibilities. For the last 17 years, this dance student took her love for dancing and tucked it away as she embraced the roles of a career woman, a devoted wife, and a mother of three. She found us on google, booked a free trial class, officially registered and got back to doing something she loved to do while making amazing friends along the way.
Balancing a career and family life is no small feat, and adding a personal passion to the mix presents its own set of challenges. However, the journey was worth every step. From kids schedules, work meetings and family gatherings, this time every week is dedicated to showing up for you and letting loose. It becomes a testament to the importance of making time for oneself.
It's never too late to reconnect with what you love to do. The roles we play in life are important, but they don't define us entirely. For so many of our students, rediscovering the love for dance not only added a new dimension to everyday life but also enriches the different roles we play (parent, spouse, professional). "Mama got her groove back" isn't just a phrase; it's a declaration that within every woman, beyond the titles and responsibilities, there's a reservoir of passion waiting to be released or discovered. It's not always just about dancing either; it was about reclaiming a part of yourself that had been hidden for too long. It's a reminder that embracing our passions is not a selfish act but a necessary one for personal fulfillment and overall well-being.
