What Is Semiclassical Indian Dance?
Dec 26, 2023
We are primarily a Bollywood dance studio, offering classes for kids to adults. Recently, we introduced a semiclassical class, driven by our students' requests to explore Indian classical dance. Being trained in Bharatanatyam myself, I understood their desire. However, teaching Bharatanatyam isn't just about learning the dance; it involves years of training post-arangetram and an extensive, complex curriculum. Additionally, our students wanted to learn classical movement and footwork but apply it to more modern-day music. Thus, we introduced the concept of "semiclassical" classes.
So, what does this mean?
"Semiclassical Indian dance" refers to a style that combines elements of classical and folk dance forms with a contemporary or innovative approach. Classical Indian dance forms, such as Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Odissi, Kuchipudi, and others, have a strong foundation in traditional techniques, gestures, and expressions. On the other hand, folk dances represent the cultural and regional diversity of India.
Semiclassical dance is a fusion of these classical and folk styles, often with a more relaxed or contemporary interpretation. Dancers may incorporate elements of classical training while also infusing modern movements, music, or themes. This allows for greater flexibility and creativity, enabling instructors/artists to experiment with new expressions and styles while maintaining a connection to the rich cultural heritage of classical Indian dance.
The term "semiclassical" can encompass various styles and interpretations. Different dance forms in various regions may have their unique approaches to semiclassical dance. It's a dynamic and evolving genre that showcases the adaptability and creativity of Indian dance practitioners.
We have evolved to offer both beginner and intermediate semiclassical dance classes in our studio. The beginner class serves as an introduction to the most ancient Indian dance style - Bharatanatyam. We start with basic posture, footwork, hand gestures, and expressions, combining these elements of classical Indian dance with modern-day Bollywood music for the best of both worlds. The intermediate class is designed for students who have taken the beginner class or have previous classical training. It combines the foundational structure of Bharatanatyam with current Bollywood dance songs, delving deeper into footwork, hand gestures, postures, and expressions. If you are interested in classical training with a modern twist, this class might be a great place to start. Book a free trial class and test it out!
