Dancing Through Life: 5 Reasons Why I Dance

Let's talk about my not-so-secret love affair with dance. If you're a dance enthusiast, I'm sure some of this will resonate with you. Dancing isn't just about steps; it's freedom. Whether it's celebration, the release of pent-up stress, or the display of expression, dancing has been therapeutic, exciting, and a catalyst for individuality and growth in my life. Here are a few reasons I have been dancing since I was in the mere single digits:

  1. Fun: This goes without saying. We wouldn't be sweating it out every week within our studio walls if it weren't. Think about weddings, birthdays, school dances, prom, going out, etc. What do all of these events at different stages of our lives have in common? Yup - dance. It wouldn't be a celebration without it. Show me someone who is dancing on the dance floor and not having fun. I'll wait.

  2. Stress Reliever: Stressed out from work, school, family/friends, drama? There is nothing more exhilarating than going into your room, closing the door, blasting the music, and letting it all out. Whether it be a coordinated routine or jumping around on your bed, there is something about dance that makes you feel a little bit lighter. I was on the Bollywood dance team during my college years. I figured that I would stop being active once classes got tougher in pharmacy school. The opposite happened. The tougher classes became, the more I found myself dancing. It was the only constant thing throughout my life that really helped me get through some tough and overwhelming times.

  3. Community: This is hands down the best part of being part of a dance studio. You're surrounded by dance lovers who are all there for the same reason. Making friends as an adult gets harder, but dance can connect strangers for a lifetime. Dancing is a universal language that fosters connections. Whether it's a group performance or simply dancing socially, it provides an avenue for shared experiences. Our Bollywood dance community is like a second family. We laugh, we dance, and we've got each other's backs when it comes to nailing those tricky steps.

  4. Confidence & Growth: Dance doesn't stop inside the studio walls. Once you learn, you want to show it off. Getting up in front of people is no easy feat. Pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone is where growth happens, and confidence builds. The best thing about this is that the newfound confidence transpires to every area of life.

  5. Culture: For the culture! Bollywood dance is such a great way to stay connected to the heritage. The Indian culture is so vibrant, celebratory, and festive, primarily through dance and music. Keeping that alive in today's world brings a sense of pride and joy for generations to come. I might not be the most traditional person on the block, but when I'm dancing Bollywood style, it's like giving a nod to my roots.

These are just a few reasons I personally am a little fond of this thing called dance. Bollywood dance isn't just a dance for me; it's a vibe, a lifestyle, and a whole lot of fun. It's more than a hobby (obviously); it's a strategic choice that enhances both my personal and professional character.
